Description
ON AUGUST 7, 1944 THE 2nd Canadian Corps commander, Lieutenant-General Guy Simonds, launched Operation TOTALIZE, a series of sequential armoured attacks designed to destroy German defences along the Caen-Falaise road. During Phase 2 the British Columbia Regiment (BCR) was to receive its baptism of fire by advancing south seven kilometres from Cintheaux to Point 195, the summit on the west side of the Caen-Falaise road, the northern tip of the ridge that dominates the last ten kilometres into Falaise. Slow and sporadic advances during the first two days left a frustrated Lt.-Gen. Simonds to order the BCR to undertake an attack at night on Point 195. Simonds was ordering an untried regiment into its first battle at night.
